How to Apply to Teach on Cambly and Cambly Kids

Firstly I'd like to thank you for considering my blog to find out more information about teaching English and applying for the most suitable job for you.

(Affiliate link disclaimer: some of the links in this article are affiliate or referral links. This means that I receive a small benefit from you using them instead of doing a general search. It doesn’t cost you anything but it helps me so thanks in advance!).

You’re either here because you’ve read my other post which details everything you need to know about working for Cambly, or you’ve heard about the company and you’re ready to go ahead and apply but you’re not sure how to.

I’m so happy you’ve decided to start your journey to financial teaching freedom! Cambly allows me to work whenever I want, and have a super flexible schedule without upsetting students or getting fired! Yay! I get paid weekly into my Paypal account for me to spend online right away! Or I use wise.com to send my money to my current account (if you sign up using my link and send over $200, you won't pay any transfer fees!)

So many of my referrals have asked for a more detailed guide on how to start and succeed in the application process for Cambly so I have decided to give you exactly that! Here is my step-by-step guide through the application process.

The Cambly application process is quick and simple. You can have the whole application process completed in an hour or less! This is a big deal because there is no interview. Just take these steps, get approved, and start working. Just like that, you can start a new job working at home and tutoring while you make good money doing it with weekly pay.

Step 1. Click this link.

Step 2:

Make sure you’re on the page that says “start tutoring on Cambly”. Sign up using Google, Facebook, or Apple, or using an email and password.

Step 3: Connection Test

It will now ask you to complete a connection test. For this, you need to have a high-speed internet connection, (ideally wired but good wifi works too), a microphone and headset, and importantly, good lighting. You must also be using Chrome on a laptop or desktop (not a tablet or phone), and I have found that it helps to clear your browser history and cache and close all other tabs. If you fail packet-loss follow the link to find out some ways to fix this or re-start your computer to start the process again to try again.

Step 4: Set up your profile

Your profile is how students can get to know a little bit about you before they call you. It’s your chance to market yourself. You can make changes later on your profile edit page.

It will ask you:

  • Upload a picture (This needs to be a clear, plain background, professional portrait, your shoulders need to be covered, and it's nice to have a big, welcoming smile).

  • Name (You can create an alias if you feel more comfortable, but make sure you remember it and feel comfortable introducing yourself as this name since your students will ask you.

  • Where are you from? Simply write your Nationality.

  • Your date of birth

  • Interests- Be YOU! What are your hobbies? What do you like learning about? What do you like talking about? Memorable life experiences. For example: “I love to meet new people and share new experiences. I have traveled to over 25 different countries for both pleasure and work. I am happiest when I’m outside or eating good food with great company."

  • Education- This is where you list and or simply explain your education. Did you go to university? If not what did you do to train for your current job? Are you currently studying? Have you got a TEFL or equivalent certification? For Example: "Bachelors' degree in Psychology from Sheffield Hallam University (2016). TEFL certification and CELTA Certification, Cambridge (2016). "

  • Experience- Whether you have relative teaching experience or not, your students and the Cambly application evaluators will want to know what you can bring to a Cambly lesson. What have you done that makes you an ideal tutor for Cambly? For example: "I began teaching English when I graduated sixth-form college. I loved it so much so I returned to teach English in Spain in 2017 after I graduated where I tight for a year. I also have more recent experience teaching English online. I have taught all ages and levels and my students have come from all over the world. I love to create my own material and resources. I love to include my toy dog and games in my younger learner classes."

  • Languages - English. Fluency - Native (you can add your second languages too!) dialect. If you are not Native you can select Fluent but be sure to demonstrate and explain your outstanding command of the language throughout your profile. Get someone to check it for you!

  • Teaching certificates - Cambly doesn’t require you to have any, but some teachers may look for tutors with certain certifications or experience, such as teachers who can coach them through their IELTS exam or Cambridge exam. When you have certifications, they love it and I’m sure it will boost your application and your likelihood of getting more bookings.

  • Who I want to teach. - Write an introduction specifically for your adult students. This is what students will see when they are looking at potential tutors.

  • My tutoring style- are you kind and patient? Fun and gregarious? Or Scholarly and knowledgeable? Students can use this information in the filter to find a tutor with a personality and teaching style that suits them.

  • I am best at tutoring students who are- beginner, intermediate or advanced. I would advise all new teachers to go with intermediate students since they are usually less demanding and it is easier to teach someone who already has a basic command of the language. This does not mean that all of your students will be at this level! It just helps students to find tutors who are suited to their learning goals. Also, when on a priority hour, you may talk to students who have chosen to have their tutor randomly selected meaning they didn’t specifically choose you.

  • My specialties- pick five subject areas in which you are confident helping students.

  • You will see a switch that you can select if you want to teach kids. Cambly kids is a slightly different platform (bookings are separate) and teachers earn slightly more ($0.20 per minute, instead of $0.17 for adults). When you hover over the switch it says: “Tutoring kids requires a different skillset than tutoring adults. As such the kids tutor application will be reviewed separately from the adult application. Being approved as an adult tutor does not guarantee approval as a Cambly Kids tutor. If you choose not to apply to be a kids tutor right now, don’t worry you can apply later on the edit profile page.

  • Why I’m here- This is where you talk about why you would like to tutor on Cambly. You can mention how you’ve enjoyed related careers, how you love the idea of connecting with people from around the world. Your interest in the English language, memory or learning. I’m sure you have your own reasons! All jobs earn you money so try to think of something more personal and attractive as an independent contractor for Cambly. Remember they want to hire people who are going to bring quality to the company. E.g. “I am known as Mrs chatterbox because I love to talk! I am confident and love to make conversations with complete strangers about any topic. I would love to meet people from all over the world.”

  • Where did you hear about Cambly? You can select 'other' and write theskinomad.com!

Step 5- Introduce yourself in a video

  • Create a short 1-3 min video showcasing your personality!

  • This doesn’t need to be anything fancy. You don’t need to edit it or anything.

  • I recommend preparing a couple of points that you’d like to include and practice it t least twice before you hit the record button.

  • LOOK INTO THE CAMERA! It is so important to look into the camera and be natural during your intro video. It’s really obvious when someone is reading a script instead of making their own sentences naturally and a script is totally unnecessary when you’re talking about yourself!

  • Here were my notes when I recorded my video.

“ Hi! My name is… I’m from… I live in… my degree + CELTA...taught in Spain... Now online… My interests (travel + meet people)... lesson style (relaxed + conversational)... look forward to seeing ….”

  • If you want to add some animation and effects to your kid's intro video go ahead! But it isn’t necessary. For the kids and adults intro, speak clearly but naturally, show them your props, and/or explain your skills. If you only want to teach adults, you won’t need to do this kids intro video.

That’s it! You’re ready to hit submit!

I hope you found this extra detail post helpful. Please don’t forget to use my link to apply, it may not make a difference to you if you’re confident with what you’re doing but it does help me and I am more than happy to help my referrals with any questions or struggles they have once they’re approved.

Technical issues:

It takes me to the page as if I'm a student. I want to be a tutor!

No worries! When you create an account, it automatically creates both a student and tutor account for you. If activated, you are given 15 free minutes to use on your student profile to call a fellow tutor and see how Cambly works, as well as ask any questions you may have!

Follow these steps to access the tutor application from the student page:

  1. Click on the circle in the upper-right hand corner of the page

  2. On the dropdown menu, select “Switch Role”

  3. Select “Tutor”

I'm having issues uploading my profile picture/video/teaching certificate, what should I do?

  • Photo/Teaching certificate: Please ensure that your photo/file is in the correct format. We recommend using JPEG or PDF. Also check that the file size is not too large. If you're having trouble, one trick is to screenshot your photo/file, then upload the screenshot instead of the original one.

  • Video: If you're struggling to upload a pre-recorded video, please try recording and submitting one live as it's much rarer for there to be an issue that way.

How can I test if my system is compatible with Cambly's video chat system?

To test whether your system is compatible with our video chat system, please go here: https://tokbox.com/developer/tools/precall/

Your internet speed needs to meet the minimum recommended speed, which is 3mbps download and 2mbps upload.

If you can pass the test and your internet speed is above the minimum, but you're still having issues, please try restarting your computer and trying again. Please be sure to keep all other applications/programs closed, as some may "steal" your mic/camera from Cambly. Also, it can help to use Incognito Mode on Chrome if some of your browser extensions are interfering.

Happy tutoring!!
