About Me

Hey! My real name is Eden Brown and I'd like to firstly thank you for choosing to read my about me page. I truly appreciate it.

I'll let you in on a not so secret secret; I'm a complete and utter snow-sports and outdoor activity freak. With such a passion for skiing and snowboarding and generally being in the mountains,  In 2019 I decided to become a ski instructor and I haven't looked back since.

“Why did you want to become a ski instructor?"- a question I frequently get asked.

I'll start right at the beginning. When I first learned to ski myself on family holidays, it involved going to ski school everyday and falling in love with the snow, the mountains, going really fast on my skis, and the fantastic, fun instructors. It didn't exactly take much for them to become my idol.

In reality, well, just like many others I went to university, I got a degree, and all throughout I dreamed of the next ski holiday I would go on, I had an imagination full of possible adventures. A lot of people expect you to get a grad job after university, enter 'the real world' or 'adult life' but for me this translated into following your passion, strive to make your dreams come true. So before I graduated I started to research how I could ski and work all year round. Friends and family suggested I did a season as a chalet host  after I graduated, and that's exactly what I did (click here to know more about chalet life working for Scott Dunn). Then I asked around in bars etc what it was really like to be a snow-sports instructor which just confirmed how cool it would really be . Then I needed to know how much money it would take to get the qualifications and relevant experience to start instructing. With the large sum in mind I worked damned hard as a chalet manager on several seasons to save for the course.

10 Solid reasons to work a ski season

In a nutshell, I completed an internship training program with Sitco in New Zealand. I completed both my level 1 and 2 NZSIA ski instructor qualifications.

What's it like to work a ski season in New Zealand?

My Journey to Niseko Ski resort

Nobody becomes a ski instructor for the money. We don't earn a great deal of it. #broke

But what we don't get in our wallets we do receive in experiences and all-round great times.

My main discipline is skiing, my parents used to say "it's like she was born to be on planks, not feet". I think this was partly because I've always been a pretty clumsy person yet when I'm skiing I'm confident, graceful, rhythmic. I quite often talk about skiing as being my therapy, it opens you to feeling inner peace. It's hard not to smile when you're gliding down the mountain fast, breathing cool fresh air, with the beauty of nature all around you.

'Chasing winters'

As an instructor I'm planning to work back to back seasons 'chasing winters' in daily search of this calm serenity that I get from being in the mountains. Through instructing I have also found a true love for teaching others how to ski, sharing my passion. I absolutely love meeting new people, listening to their life story snippets, I learn so much about the world from my students as many of them have travelled and experienced much more than me! I don't always start each season with an idea of where I'm going next or where my paycheck will come from in between, but with a few inspirational conversations with other instructors and some research into visas I'm on my way to getting excited about the next winter before the current one is even finished! Perhaps one day I'll find a mountain or two to settle into a more stable lifestyle but for now, I'm happy living life on the edge. of a mountain.

So i've decided to write this blog as a way of sharing any words of inspiration or wisdom as well as the cold hard facts of life within the world of a ski instructor in search of my happy place. With your comments, together we can help each other find happy places.
